How I chose schools to apply to

Don't be afraid to apply to a lot of schools, ESPECIALLY if you have limited financial resources (aka you're poor) because you can get waivers from College Board and most institutions. Apply to your in-state schools even if you don't want to attend because you can use their lower cost of attendance as leverage for other schools.

Michigan is more than just a Big 10 school and they like to be acknowledged for their academics--in my essay I mentioned that it (we?) are often placed in the same category as Ivy league schools.

How I chose schools to apply to

It's okay to apply to different schools for different majors. I didn't feel ready for USC's prescreening deadline but applied and was admitted as a psych major. Schools also know that you might change your major once you're there.
