At UPenn he went by the name John Stephens. In last year’s commencement address he reflected: “When I graduated from Penn, I had many of the traditional opportunities in front of you now, and I took a job at the Boston Consulting Group. But I couldn’t shake my passion for music. I had followed the path that the Penn graduate was supposed to take, but I didn’t fall in love. I immediately started thinking about how I could leave BCG and become a full-time musician… But I was rejected by all the major labels; some of them rejected me multiple times.” He almost gave up, until his freshman year roommate from Penn came to the rescue. The friend said “hey you should meet my cousin…” That cousin was Kanye West. They’ve been producing partners ever since.
Jones was determined to go to Harvard from a young age. In an interview with The Guardian she explained: “I am who I am, and I wanted to go to Harvard when I was four years old, and I still wanted to go when I was 18, and so I went.” She was a resident of Eliot House and belonged to the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Harvard Radcliffe Dramatic Club, Harvard Opportunes, Black Students Association, and the Signet Society. She planned to be a lawyer, but claims the O.J. Simpson trial changed her mind.
